South African jurist Navi Pillay has been honored with the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her significant contributions to promoting human rights, strengthening international law, and advocating peaceful conflict resolution. The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized Pillay’s efforts, emphasizing her defense of human rights during South Africa’s apartheid era and her leadership roles in international criminal tribunals and as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Pillay led the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory and, in September 2025, the commission reported that Israel had committed genocidal acts in Gaza with alleged intent to destroy Palestinians. This report was met with strong rejection and accusations of bias from Israel, which also criticized Pillay following the Nobel announcement.

The Nobel Committee praised Pillay for demonstrating how legal institutions and universal principles of law can help prevent violence and resolve conflicts. Describing her as a respected international jurist, the committee highlighted her independence and expertise in bolstering international law institutions.

Pillay, aged 85, was attending a gathering of human rights lawyers and jurists in Nuremberg, Germany, when she learned of her award. Expressing surprise, she underscored the importance of impartial evidence examination and law application. Her career includes serving as a judge on international criminal tribunals and involvement in proceedings at the International Court of Justice concerning genocide allegations against Myanmar.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa hailed the award, commending Pillay’s contributions to peace, human dignity, and justice. Human rights advocates have also acknowledged her role in advancing accountability for serious international crimes, such as genocide and sexual violence.

The Nobel Peace Prize not only honors Pillay’s long-standing work in international law but also underscores the vital role of legal institutions in safeguarding human rights and addressing global atrocities.
