A new law in China, aimed at promoting ethnic unity and progress, has sparked concerns among Taiwanese officials about its implications for critics of Beijing residing abroad. The legislation, which recently came into effect, mandates Chinese citizens to uphold national unity and enables the government to take legal action against those perceived to be fostering division, irrespective of their location.
The Taiwanese security official highlighted five main strategies that China is allegedly using to suppress dissent beyond its borders. These include criminalizing anti-government expressions made overseas, intimidating critics by retaliating against their families, utilizing international legal tools like Interpol red notices to chase down dissidents, branding supporters of democracy movements as extremists, and engaging in abductions or forced repatriations.
Additionally, it is alleged that China operates clandestine police stations in other countries. These stations are purportedly used to oversee and exert pressure on critics living abroad, raising significant issues with respect to breaches of international law and diplomatic standards.
In light of these developments, Taiwan has announced measures to safeguard its citizens and counteract foreign interference. This includes efforts to raise public awareness about the potential dangers associated with traveling to China and bolstering actions to mitigate activities that could facilitate foreign meddling.
