Amid escalating military tensions in the region, Taiwan’s envoy to the United States, Alexander Yui, has underscored the critical need for ongoing U.S. arms deliveries to bolster Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities. Yui highlighted the island’s commitment to boosting its defense budget, as well as its determination to enhance its own capacity to counter potential security threats. He stressed that while international support is valuable, Taiwan must primarily focus on strengthening its own defensive measures.

The U.S. is currently reviewing a proposed arms package valued at $14 billion intended to enhance Taiwan’s defense systems. This package has garnered backing from U.S. lawmakers who perceive Taiwan’s security concerns as increasingly pressing, given China’s growing military presence in the vicinity. Yui argued that the level of military aid should be proportionate to the threat posed by frequent Chinese military exercises, naval operations, and aircraft activities near Taiwan’s borders.

Yui reiterated Taiwan’s objective of safeguarding its security and democratic way of life through defensive strategies. He emphasized that these measures are crucial in maintaining stability in the face of China’s assertive military maneuvers. The island’s emphasis on self-reliance in defense aligns with its broader strategy of ensuring resilience against potential aggression.

U.S. officials have assured that the longstanding policy towards Taiwan remains consistent, with security support continuing to be a cornerstone of the bilateral relationship. This assurance comes as Taiwan expresses confidence in its enduring partnership with the United States, despite persistent regional frictions.
