The bridge, spanning 2.4 kilometers, connects Detroit, Michigan, with Windsor, Ontario, and is anticipated to be a vital trade and transportation link between Canada and the U.S. Despite the diplomatic strain, both nations are still targeting to open the bridge for traffic on July 27. The project, which broke ground in 2018, cost approximately $4.4 billion, funded by Canada under an agreement to recoup expenses through toll collection.
Recently, Canada revealed an agreement to allocate 50% of net revenue from the bridge and related crossings to a U.S.-controlled economic development fund. This decision has faced criticism from opposition lawmakers within Canada, questioning the fairness of the revenue-sharing arrangement.
The cancellation of the joint ceremony follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s declaration of new tariffs on Canadian imports, amid ongoing trade disputes concerning sectors such as automobiles, alcohol, and dairy products. The tariffs are set to be implemented in 30 days, offering a window for further negotiations between the two countries.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has affirmed his administration’s commitment to free and fair trade while engaging in dialogue with the U.S. Meanwhile, Ontario Premier Doug Ford has advocated for a reciprocal response through matching tariffs if the U.S. tariffs are enforced.
