Vance claimed that despite Carney’s efforts, Canada eventually compromised on several key issues during these negotiations.
The leak emerges as both the United States and Canada are in the midst of trying to finalize a trade agreement. President Trump had earlier warned of imposing steep 50% tariffs on Canadian goods if negotiations did not progress favorably. Reports suggest that the potential deal might see Canada agreeing to reintroduce American alcohol products in its retail markets as part of an effort to avoid these hefty tariffs.
Initially, Trump had set a deadline of August 19 for implementing the tariffs but decided to postpone the imposition by three days. The White House justified the proposed tariffs by pointing to what it described as unfair trade barriers imposed by Canada on U.S. alcohol sales.
